AZ Urban Studio has secured planning permission and listed building consent for the installation of a large permanent art work by the renowned artist Rachel Whiteread to the facade of the Grade II* listed Whitechapel Gallery. The work will see the completion of the celebrated Art Noveau facade more than a century after it was built without the decorative frieze orginally envisaged for the panel in the upper area of the Whitechapel High Street elevation. The project is part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, and continues the long association between Rachel Whiteread and the gallery.

For more information please see Whitechapel project sheet

The planning application for redevelopment of 157 High Street, Wanstead was submitted just before Christmas, and we are confident of success on this third attempt with Platform 5 Architects to secure the mixed-use redevelopment of this important site in the Wanstead village conservation area. The local newspaper is of course keeping a close eye on the application (link)

We were pleased to return to the office in January and find a bag of post containing a few planning permissions… Particularly welcome was a permission secured for private clients to convert a wonderful building in NW3 from a homeless hostel back into a large single dwelling. A good start to the New Year and a huge relief for our clients who had purchased the property three months earlier.

AZ Urban Studio have secured planning consent for an innovative development incorporating office accommodation and eight large Passivhaus apartments overlooking Guy Street park in London, SE1.

Full planning permission was granted by the London Borough of Southwark for the redevelopment of this underutilised site on Weston Street following extensive pre and post application negotiations. AZ Urban Studio led the project through the planning process, working with AHMM architects.

The development is being promoted by Solidspace Developments and builds on their previous residential schemes exploring a new model of apartment living.

Nic Crawley, AHMM’s Head of Sustainability, says ‘81-83 Weston Street is a great example of how the integration of architecture, structure and a carefully considered environmental approach can create exciting, excellent quality internal spaces whilst greatly improving long term occupant comfort and resilience to a changing climate and rising fuel prices.’

Further information of the Weston Street project can be found here.

Two years after AZ Urban Studio secured planning permission for a substantial extension to this charming isolated cottage in the South Downs AONB, building work on the site is now completed. Our planning team advised MW Architects through the planning process, and we are delighted to now see the finished product. With the main house nearly completed the architects can now focus their attention on the semi-sunken pavilion building in the garden to house our client’s film library, which AZ Urban Studio also secured planning permission for last year.

For more on AZ Urban Studio’s experience in rural planning and on domestic scale projects, check out the projects section of our website. We enjoy working with MW Architects and you can find out more at www.mwarchitects.co.uk

The new Land Rover Experience Centre at Luton Hoo Estate has just opened for business, 6 months after our planning team led one of their more unusual rural projects in recent years. The site for the off-road driving training course is located in the Green Belt, approximately 2km south of Luton, and extends to about 4 hectares of former agricultural land. AZ Urban Studio engaged in early discussions with Central Bedfordshire Council to ensure that key planning issues were identified from the outset and fully addressed and justified within the application documents – see the project sheet on our website for more details.

We are delighted to have gained another important planning permission for the Luton Hoo Estate, and look forward to receiving some off-road driving training ourselves!

Check out www.landroverdriving.co.uk if you fancy a go.

AZ Urban Studio just secured another temporary planning permission for The Skyroom at Magdalen House in Southwark’s vibrant Borough & Bankside area. The Skyroom is a collaboration between The Architecture Foundation and Lake Estates, and was designed by David Kohn Architects. The project, originally commissioned for the London Festival of Architecture 2010, has won widespread critical acclaim in the design press, and we hope that it will be an enjoyable long summer of events at this stunning venue.
