Development planning

In a collaborative effort, AZ Urban Studio and Nissen Richards Studio successfully obtained planning permission for the extension of a mixed-use building located on Turner Street in the historically significant area of Whitechapel. The project involved the construction of a four-story standalone extension at the rear of the existing ground floor, resulting in the creation of four new residential dwellings. Furthermore, the existing building will be refurbished to accommodate family-size homes and enhance the commercial space.

The site posed several challenges due to its backland location, close proximity to the parent building, presence within a Conservation Area, and adjacency to a major development site. Despite these obstacles, the design, spearheaded by Nissen Richards Studio, showcased an innovative rear extension that seamlessly integrated four flats. Additionally, the ground floor received upgrades to the commercial and education areas, and the inclusion of a lift enhanced accessibility.

AZ Urban Studio played a crucial role in advising the development design team throughout the process. We provided valuable guidance and prepared a comprehensive Planning/Heritage statement that justified the proposed development. This statement addressed critical issues such as development principles, mix and tenure of the properties, parking provisions, design considerations, and preservation of the area’s heritage.
